Eustace Conway and Turtle Island Preserve

In my quest for learning about taking care of horses on the road, a friend of mine told me about this guy Eustace Conway who rode across the country. There is a book written about him called the Last American Man, and I was able to get it from the New York Public Library. This friend of mine also told me that Eustace had some land somewhere and had apprentices come live there to learn about living off the land, cooking with campfires, logging/working with horses, etc. So,I found an address for him at  Turtle Island Preserve. I wrote him a letter back in January '07 asking if I could learn about traveling with horses , and if he was taking any smaller trips, could I come along. In early March, I got a phone call at 7am from Eustace inviting me to Durham , NC to join him and a team of Turtle Island folks as they set up a camp and did some logging using horse power. He told me to bring my questions about horses and also said I could learn a bit just being there at the camp with the horses. The trip was in a few days, so I had to do some scrambling to get down there, but I did. Here is some video:
